“A well organised yet entirely child led session. Plenty of suggested activities, yet no dictation. Gives parents ideas of things they could replicate. And so nice to be outdoors, in beautiful surroundings.”

– Kristabel Beeley

What is Muddy Feet Outdoor Playgroup?

Muddy Feet is an outdoor, all weather playgroup originally designed for children under 5, held in Rushcliffe Country Park during school holidays, however due to the child-led nature of our sessions, both older and younger siblings are welcome. We follow the Forest School ethos, encouraging and enabling children to experience nature and the outdoors. We aim to let children explore and learn through nature, with the emphasis on child-led play and letting them get their hands dirty. All sessions will be lead by a Forest Schools trained practitioner, Fran Groombridge.

Where is the site?

Directions from the car park; Follow the path around the lake, head up past the playground (keeping the playground on your left.) Head up the hill and over the railway bridge, at the top of the bridge turn left, following signs for Gibbies Wood. Walk past the dragonfly and through the wood. You will then pass a wooden grasshopper on your left, turn left by the snake’s head and you will find us in the clearing ahead of you!

Rushcliffe Country Park is open to the public and as such the area where we are holding the playgroup is open to the public and there may be dogs off their leads.

Please note that your child is your responsibility whilst attending Muddy Feet Outdoor Playgroup. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

What will a typical Muddy Feet session be like?

Our sessions will begin at 10:00 around the Forest Circle, where the theme for each session will be introduced. There will be a range of outdoor activities offered to encourage play and creativity available to the children. Each week there will be an activity to encourage play and creativity available to the children. The rest of the session will be very much child-led, with us providing opportunities for the children to explore our forest area. Tea and fruit / cake will be provided at around 10.45—11.00 around the Forest Circle. We will then finish the session by singing our Forest Song (participation is encouraged, especially with the singing!)

How much does it cost?

For the holiday sessions, the costs are as follows:

£5 / per session for one child

£2.50 / per session for additional siblings

Under ones are free

What activities can I expect?

We will begin each session with a story around the Forest Circle, which will inspire our activities. Each week there will be an art / craft activity introduced. This could range from making jingle sticks, doing bark rubbings, building an elf house, making a mud creature or weaving a natural crown. The activities will be guided by what the children are interested in. The rest of the session will be very much child-led. We will set up opportunities for the children to explore, for example providing pots and pans for a mud kitchen, or planks for them to walk along, but the sessions are not prescribed, we will be led by what the children want to do.

What does my child need to bring?

As we are an all weather, all year round playgroup, your child will need appropriate clothing, and as you know the weather here in Britain can be unpredictable! We suggest for all sessions;

  • An all in one waterproof

  • Wellies / walking boots / sturdy shoes

  • Water

Then, depending on the weather;

  • Sunhat

  • Suncream

  • Extra layers

  • Hat

  • Gloves

What do you mean by all weather?

Here at Muddy Feet, we follow the philosophy ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment!’ So we will be venturing out in all weathers, throughout the year. There are only two conditions in which we are unable to venture out for safety reasons and these are high winds and thunderstorms.

What if it is raining?

As mentioned above, we will be holding the playgroup in all weathers, but we want to make you as comfortable as we can, whilst enjoying the outdoors! We have two large tarpaulins that we will bring with us and if necessary we will use these to construct a shelter to hold the session in. Tea and snacks will be provided to keep you warm as well!

What about hand washing and toilets?

Due to the nature of the playgroup, children will get muddy and dirty! However a hand washing station will be set up by the Forest Circle enabling children (and adults) to wash their hands before eating snacks. There are composting toilets within Rushcliffe Country Park about a five minute walk from the site.

If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
