 FAQs

What is Muddy Feet Outdoor Playgroup?

Muddy Feet is an outdoor, all weather playgroup for children under 5, held in the Meadow Covert Woodland in Edwalton and at St Peter’s Church Centre in Tollerton. We follow the Forest School ethos, encouraging and enabling children to experience nature and the outdoors. We aim to let children explore and learn through nature, with the emphasis on child-led play and letting them get their hands dirty. All sessions will be lead by a Forest Schools trained practitioner, Fran Groombridge.

Where is the site?

Tollerton

The Tollerton site is accessed via St Peter’s Church Centre, Tollerton Lane, Tollerton, NG12 4FT. We will meet outside the main entrance to the Church Centre each week, where we will take a register before walking into the woods. If you are unable to attend or are running late, please let us know so that we can head into the woods and meet you there.

Edwalton

The Edwalton site is accessed via Edwalton Primary School, Wellin Lane, Edwalton. We will meet outside the main entrance to Edwalton Primary School each week, where we will take a register before walking into the woods. If you are unable to attend or are running late, please let us know so that we can head into the woods and meet you there.

The Meadow Covert Woodland is fully enclosed and is only accessed via Edwalton Primary School. At times there may be children and teachers from the school present in the woods.

Please note that your child is your responsibility whilst attending Muddy Feet Outdoor Playgroup. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

What will a typical Muddy Feet session be like?

Our sessions will begin at 10.30am around the Forest Circle. Each week there will be an activity to encourage play and creativity available to the children. The rest of the session will be very much child-led, with us providing opportunities for the children to explore our forest area. Tea and fruit / cake will be provided at around 11.00-11.30am around the Forest Circle.

What activities can I expect?

We will begin each session with a story around the Forest Circle, which will inspire our activities. Each week there will be an art / craft activity introduced. This could range from making jingle sticks, doing bark rubbings, building an elf house, making a mud creature or weaving a natural crown. The activities will be guided by what the children are interested in. The rest of the session will be very much child-led. We will set up opportunities for the children to explore, for example providing pots and pans for a mud kitchen, or planks for them to walk along, but the sessions are not prescribed, we will be led by what the children want to do.

How much does it cost?

For the weekly sessions, the costs are as follows:

£9 / per session for one child

£7 / per session for additional siblings

£5 / per session for pre-walking children

Pre-walking siblings go FREE!

We recommend coming to a half term block to get the full Forest School experience however we know that this isn’t always possible so individual sessions can be booked.  You can book your sessions here.

What does my child need to bring?

As we are an all weather, all year round playgroup, your child will need appropriate clothing, and as you know the weather here in Britain can be unpredictable! We suggest for all sessions:

  • An all in one waterproof

  • Wellies / walking boots / sturdy shoes

  • Water

Then, depending on the weather;

  • Sunhat

  • Suncream

  • Extra layers

  • Hat

  • Gloves

What do you mean by all weather?

Here at Muddy Feet, we follow the philosophy ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad equipment!’ So we will be venturing out in all weathers, throughout the year. There are only two conditions in which we are unable to venture out for safety reasons and these are high winds and thunderstorms.

What if it is raining?

As mentioned above, we will be holding the playgroup in all weathers, but we want to make you as comfortable as we can, whilst enjoying the outdoors! We have two large tarpaulins that we will bring with us and if necessary we will use these to construct a shelter to hold the session in. Tea and snacks will be provided to keep you warm as well!

What about hand washing and toilets?

Due to the nature of the playgroup, children will get muddy and dirty! However a hand washing station will be set up by the Forest Circle enabling children (and adults) to wash their hands before eating snacks. We have access to toilets within Edwalton Primary School and at the Tollerton site we have access to an indoor space with toilets and handwashing facilities.
